CHAPTER 3 – The Subconscious Mind
Revealed
THE SUBCONSCIOUS DISCOVERY
In the 19th century Dr. Sigmund Freud proved
without doubt the existence of a second mind, calling it the
unconscious or subconscious mind but more importantly the power was
apparently limitlessness. Yet we are unfortunately held back from
realising our full potential and capabilities, from our conscious
thoughts of limitations
"The conscious mind may be
compared to a fountain playing in the sun and falling back into the
great subterranean pool of subconscious from which it rises." Sigmund
Freud
The subconscious
mind is something of an enigma; it cannot be measured or seen; yet we
are only just scratching the surface of its strengths and capabilities,
only recently perhaps at the turn of the century that the existence of
an unconscious mind within the brain became accepted.
Conscious thoughts are what you
are doing
right now, absorbing the information written out before you. Your
memory banks
are sifting through all the information and storing the files in order
of
importance for you to draw on at a later date. Although some
information will
appear to be lost beyond recollection, yet the subconscious mind will
never
forget.
Consciousness is
thought, brought on by an electric current from the brain cell muscle,
by way of neurones firing repeatedly along fibre nerves. Brain cells
are continually dying, in fact at the rate of millions per day, but
don't be alarmed as their are billions of cells in
the human brain and cannot be used up in a person's life time.
The Brain and Subconscious belief system.
The brain is divided into two parts, half of the brain controls an
opposite side of the body, whilst the other side of the brain controls
the other half of your body.
If you are right handed (85%
approx of
the population) then the left hemisphere of your brain controls the
right side of your body. (Opposite if you are left-handed.) Your left
hemisphere part of the brain controls all conscious thought and logical
thinking such as reason, language, mathematics, reading, writing,
linear, analysis.
Your right side of the brain controls all your creativity, your unconscious and
subconscious, imagination, rhythm, visualisation, images, memory, body
functions. Joining together the two parts of the brain are direct
neural connectors called corpus callosum. This is how
transmission of thoughts from your right side of the brain to your left
are transmitted.
Your Brain also has a stem at its base that
in turn is connected to your spinal chord and nervous system. The right
part of the brain, is where you're subconscious, is mainly situated. It
has control over the autonomic nervous system, i.e. involuntary glands,
muscles, organs, etc. The subconscious is a non-thinking service
mechanism, liken to a computer's programming chip. It cannot reason,
analyse or argue with you, it only serves you.

We all have a "subconscious mind" but not everyone realises or
understands its workings; especially its use's, of which can be tapped
for our own advantage. It is the powerhouse of every thing we do, it is
the seat of our imagination, it is intermingled to our past experiences
and memory. It controls our emotions our feelings, it succumbs to
fears, it rejoices in our ecstasy. It can secrete into the brain and
body tissue over 2000 chemicals, it never sleeps, and it controls all
non-thinking processes such as heart beat, breathing, blood pressure
and other parts of the autonomic nerve system. It mostly works for your
own benefit, but it can also be programmed to our detriment and our
own-programmed limitations.
The Secret to Success Lies in
Controlling Your Thoughts. Everything in the physical world is made of
atoms. Atoms are made of energy. And energy is
made of consciousness. Your thoughts not only matter, they create
matter! Thought is where everything material comes from. This simply
means that there is no
objective reality – just the opposite of what we were all taught in
school. Your
subconscious mind processes about 400 billion bits of information per
second and these impulses travel at a speed of up to 100,000 mph!
Compare this to your conscious
mind, which processes only about 2,000 bits of information per second
and its
impulses travel only at 100-150 mph. Besides that, the conscious mind
can
only operate in the past or in the future, not in the now.
I am sure you have experienced at some time or another driving you car,
and for an instant during the drive, you suddenly became aware that you
were driving. Prior to that sudden conscious jolt into the present
moment, your conscious mind was busy with thinking and your
subconscious mind drove the car – all on its own.
As an analogy the brain muscle is
shaped similar to a soft half walnut, consisting of a grey matter,
enclosed within the hard cranium shell, resting upon hard bony plinths.
The workings of
the human brain is more complex than any computer ever made, it can
absorb
thousands of facts in split seconds, take on board life threatening
situations
and help divert blood flow and adrenaline to parts of the body in
distress.
It is the great main control tower of the human body. Science up to now
has only scratched its surface of capabilities.
My favourite metaphor for the conscious and unconscious mind's is a
darkened room with all sorts of objects littered about it (the
subconscious) and a torch (the conscious) picking out details in the
room, able to focus upon only a few things at any one time. Whatever
the torch is shining upon will be brightly lit and visible, while the
rest of the room is dark; although the rest of the room is still there,
you cannot see it. In the same way, whatever your attention is focused
on is uppermost in you consciousness and the rest of your memories and your wisdom are still there.
The average
person processes over 60'000 separate thoughts per day, of which 90%
occur subconsciously. Automatic thoughts are produced by our
subconscious mind and continue to execute without the involvement of
our conscious mind. Think about how many things you just do, day in day
out,
without even consciously thinking about it. These automatic thoughts
are
like mini computer programs in our subconscious minds. They
automatically come into action as a response to stimuli in our
environment.
In one sense our lives are run
mainly by our subconscious minds. We are largely unaware of our autonomic processes and thinking, and yet every
single second our subconscious mind receive over two million messages
of sensory awareness. It would be impossible to process all that
information consciously, so the subconscious sorts it and presents you
with a summary of what is taking place. For example, when you are in a
crowded room, your subconscious mind is monitoring all the
conversations that are taking place around you. Then, if somebody over
the other side of the room says your name, suddenly you hear
it. The subconscious mind sorted that piece of information and brought
it
to your conscious attention. The subconscious mind can also delete
information from our conscious awareness. (See Mind Matters)
To begin to understand the subconscious mind; a little understanding
about psychology is very important. Each school of psychology has its own views from Jung to
Freud but
all believe in the common factor of unconscious thoughts that rule our
lives, from behaviour to mechanical thoughts and how organism can turn
into a series of stimulus response.
Every thought or idea causes a physical reaction within a persons body,
for example, worry, anger, anxiety, fear, stimulates the adrenal glands
and the increased adrenaline in the blood stream causes many
body changes, which in turn affects your pulse rate. The increased
adrenaline causes cholesterol that hardens the arteries; this
can contribute to heart problems.
On the other hand feelings of
achievement, satisfaction, well being can trigger off beneficial hormones and opiates, such as endorphins, etc.. Condition response within
the nervous system can therefore be controlled by
thoughts within the brain, either good or bad.
While
many automatic
thoughts are positive, some of them can create undesirable limitations
in
terms of your ability to evolve, progress and reach significant
personal goals
in your life – you could call them “success blockers”. They
simply prevent you from
progressing in areas where you'd like to succeed.
Automatic
thoughts determine your thought patterns, attitudes and behaviors. The
reactions you then observe from your environment validate your thoughts. A
key observation is that certain “automatic thoughts” are triggered
by common belief patterns (schema) with groups of
people who experience the same or similar challenges
and limitations. To become rich in your life you
will need to become rich in your mind; while subconscious
programming is the
catalyst to greater things.
How to tap into you’re own subconscious mind?
Sit in a quite room on your own
where you are not likely to be disturbed and preferably as quite as
possible,
maybe with ear plugs, after a few minutes listen carefully to the
chatter
in your head. Your conscious mind is being bombarded with thoughts
directed
from your subconscious mind. Slowly reduce the thought patterns to an
absolute
minimum; this is best done as a meditation exercise. Concentrate on an
object
or a lighted candle, empty your conscious mind and soon after
practising
this, creative thoughts and images will come into you mind, you will
know
then, when it is time to ask questions to your subconscious mind and
soon
you will then receive the answers in images and urges.
Self-hypnosis is a further excellent vehicle to
tap into the subconscious mind. Simply sit or lie down in a quite room
and start to relax your whole body. A stage at a time, start from the
toes then up the legs into the thighs and the stomach area, then the
chest, neck and head, then the brain. Count down from ten to one and at
every descending number, relax. Soon with practice you can go into a
self-hypnosis trance very easily. Here you can visualize your
achievement of becoming rich.
