Like Cheshire, Herefordshire is an English border county, included here as the River Wye winds its stately way through, before returning to Wales to relieve the Monnow of its role as the Monmouthshire border with England, a task the Wye fulfills until it flows into the Severn at Chepstow. The famous bookshop town of Hay on Wye lies on the Herefordshire border, along which are still to found ruined Marcher castles, historical remnants from the many bygone battles with Wales. A famously unspoilt English county, Herefordshire is famous for its cider orchards and for the Forest of Dean. Many beats of the River Wye offer both coarse and game fishing, coarse fishing being particularly well provided for in Herefordshire.

The River Wye (Welsh: Afon Gwy) is the fifth-longest river in the UK and for parts of its length forms part of the border between England and Wales. The source of the Wye is in the Welsh mountains at Plynlimon.
